It needs to "listen" to satellite signals from space, "feel" its own motion state, and "see" the details of its surroundings clearly. Guidance from the Stars: GNSS and Its Limitations (Global Navigation Satellite System)


The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is the foundation of the positioning technology we are most familiar with, encompassing systems like the US's GPS, Russia's GLONASS, the EU's Galileo, and China's BeiDou. The basic principle involves receiving signals from at least four satellites. However, autonomous vehicles require centimeter-level positioning accuracy. Standard GNSS errors primarily stem from satellite orbit errors, satellite clock errors, ionospheric delay, tropospheric delay, and the particularly troublesome "Multipath Effect." In urban environments with tall buildings, satellite signals can reflect off structures before reaching the receiver, causing erroneous distance measurements. Signal blockage (e.g., in tunnels, underground garages) directly leads to positioning failure.


To overcome these limitations, autonomous vehicles typically employ more advanced GNSS techniques:


  • Differential GPS (DGPS): Uses ground-based reference stations with known coordinates to calculate and broadcast GNSS error correction information, improving positioning accuracy within a region.

  • Real-Time Kinematic (RTK): Achieves centimeter-level accuracy by receiving carrier phase observation data from a reference station or network RTK service and performing differential calculations. However, RTK requires relatively close reference stations (usually within tens of kilometers) and demands high signal continuity.

  • Precise Point Positioning (PPP): Does not rely on ground reference stations. Instead, it uses precise satellite orbit and clock correction data provided by global analysis centers to directly correct the receiver's observation data. PPP can achieve high accuracy (several centimeters to tens of centimeters) globally, but its convergence time (time to reach stable accuracy) is typically longer than RTK.

  • PPP-RTK: An emerging technology combining the advantages of PPP and RTK, aiming to provide fast-converging centimeter-level positioning services over wide areas.


Despite these enhancements, GNSS remains inherently susceptible to signal blockage and interference, making it unsuitable as the sole, all-weather, all-scenario positioning solution for autonomous vehicles.



The Power of Inertia: IMU's Role in Aiding Localization (Inertial Measurement Unit)

When GNSS signals are temporarily lost or interfered with (e.g., entering a tunnel or briefly passing through areas blocked by tall buildings), how does the vehicle maintain its position? This is where the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) comes in. An IMU typically consists of accelerometers and gyroscopes.


  • Accelerometers: Measure linear acceleration along three axes.

  • Gyroscopes: Measure angular velocity (rate of rotation) around three axes.


By integrating these measurements over time, the IMU can estimate the vehicle's displacement and orientation changes (e.g., how many meters it moved forward, how many degrees it turned). This process is called "Dead Reckoning." The advantage of an IMU is that it's completely independent of external signals, unaffected by environmental blockages, and provides very high-frequency motion updates (often hundreds of Hertz).


However, the main drawback of the IMU is "cumulative error" or "drift." Due to tiny sensor errors and the integration process, the estimated position gradually deviates from the true position over time, and the error accumulates. Therefore, an IMU cannot provide accurate positioning independently for extended periods.     • All-Weather Operation: Millimeter waves can penetrate rain, fog, snow, and dust, making radar far less affected by adverse weather than LiDAR and cameras.

    • Direct Velocity Measurement: Using the Doppler effect, radar can directly and accurately measure the relative velocity of targets.

    • Relatively Low Cost: Compared to LiDAR, automotive-grade radar is less expensive and the technology is more mature.


  • The main drawbacks of radar are its relatively lower angular resolution (ability to distinguish objects at different bearings) and vertical resolution, making it difficult to accurately depict object shapes and details. Its ability to identify small, stationary obstacles is also weaker (although 4D radar is improving this).


Cameras provide rich semantic information, radar offers reliable ranging and velocity measurement (especially in bad weather), and LiDAR delivers precise 3D structural information. Their respective strengths effectively compensate for each other's weaknesses.

For example, knowing a traffic light is ahead prompts the system to specifically detect its status.


  • Redundant Safety: In situations where certain sensors temporarily fail or their performance degrades, the HD Map provides an important layer of redundant information, helping the vehicle maintain basic safe driving capabilities.


However, creating and maintaining HD Maps is costly, requiring specialized survey vehicles and continuous update mechanisms to reflect real-world road changes (like construction or lane repainting). This poses a significant challenge for widespread HD Map adoption.
